Student Art

I believe that, "it's important in a culture that is bombarded with visual imagery on a daily basis, it is important for children to learn how to critically negotiate a visually saturated world."

Art production, criticism, theory and history integrated with Discipline Based Art Education in areas such as mulitculteralism and democracy are integral components of my classroom experience.

Although all my students will not grow up to be professional artists, they will have the experiences in my classroom that will lead them to being creative and critical thinkers who actively participate as members in our democratic society.

Creating a meaningful connection between students lives and art education will help them understand their everyday life experiences, link them to their culture, and understanding themselves in relation to their culture. Issues of identity, storytelling, the body, knowlege, meaning, ecology, interpretation, and diversity will be present in the classroom to encourage highly developed dialog and perception.

Expanding dialog and understanding of their own ideas, as well as the ideas of others will develop critical thinking. In this I hope students will grow into adults with the ability to engage freely in dialogs about issues that surround their lives, make good decisions for themselves and others, and contibute to the well-being of society.
